Thoughts on user access

We are about to implement EPiServer CMS for our upcoming website and was planning on doing most of the developing ouselves. One big issue we're facing is the fact that we want to create a kind of area much like this Knowledgecenter that EPiServer has. Our users are created from a Notes based CRM and eventually ends up in an SQL-database wich controls our login system today. How to do this best in CMS, regarding that in the first step we want to give access to about 6000 users, and later up to about 40 000. How to manage this correctly. They are not to be able to access EPiServer functions with page editing or anything like that, but its more like a community with forums, newsletters and things like that. Anyone with similar problems who like to share som wisdom?
