tblPageToPageType - Safe to use

Is tblPageToPageType safe to use or is it obsolete?
It is still accessed by Stored Proc editGetPageTypesForPage available through PageTypeDB.ListForNewPage(PageReference) but there is no API to manipulate it as far as I can see.
