Custom property: digit/dojo widget to load and save values from two dropdowns

I have requirement to load two dropdowns, first one with some values from the descendent pages and the second one to load with options relevant to the value that is selected in first dropdown. Has anyone done a custom property of this sort before? Any guidance is very much appreciated.
