ImageEditor ContentReference string cannot be null/empty

When using episerver ImageEditor and trying to save it I get the ContentReference string cannot be null/empty. Which is very similar to what nansen blogged about for episerver cms 6, http://blog.nansen.com/2011/05/episerverexception-pagereference-string.html
However, their workaround does not work anymore...
Anyone else has this problem?
