Custom Category Selection Window

Hi, I am looking for a way to replace current category selection window check box tree in edit mode with a filter categories depending on the page type.
I know how to create a drop down or checkbox list but I do not know how to REPLACE the current "Category Selection" data with a filtered list of categories.
Please do reply if you are aware of any way to implement above request.
