Sudden login problems

Sorry if this has been asked before, but I searched and couldn't find anything. A clients EPiServer 4.61 installation all of a sudden fails all authentication attempts on all accounts. A server reboot does not help, and as far as I know, nothing has been changed on the server (except perhaps content changes). I don't have physical access to the server (nor can I log in remotely), so I would like to know, is it possible to turn on detailed debugging information about why an authentication attempt fails? Thanks! Although it wasn't helpful in debugging _why_ login fails (the logs only says "1.2.3 Authenticate request" and nothing about failed logins), I did see that some users actually managed to login. So I guess the admin account and some of the editor accounts have lost their rights somehow...
