Update Code filed to a new code

Hi.

Due to an update of our PIM system, I have to go through all the products and update their Code fields.

How do I do this in the smoothest way.

Has a JSON file with old ID as well as new ID to replace the old ones.

Or is there a way to not depend on both systems having the same ID?
Can I, for example, retrieve a product through an article number stored in the MetaField database? Ex ItemNo?

The code is probably most important piece of data internally, you would need to handle inventory and prices. If those come with PIM updates then it would be easier for you.

I don't know about "smoothest", but safest and reasonably fast
