Help! : Local Dev of Episerver 4

Vote:

Hi all,

I have the following scenario:

Episerver 4 installed on Test Server

Episerver DB installed (SQL Server 2005) on Test Server

Local instance of VS 2003 and source code

We have more than 2 developers working on the solution. Do we need an instance of Episerver running on each dev machine (pointing at the Episerver DB on the test server)? Or can we just point our local dev instances to Episerver on the Test server?

Any links to helpful articles would be useful?

Bags of .Net experience but none of Episerver!

Thanks,Keith.

You need an EPiServer installation on each dev machine, pointing to the test server db.

What version of EPiServer 4 are you using? I am guessing somewhere along the lines of 4.51 as you are running VS 2003 (.NET 1.1?), but I might be wrong. Try the Tech notes/White papers-section of this web site, it will get you started: http://world.episerver.com/Documentation/Categories/Documentation-Type/Tech-notes/

For instance, installation instructions for version 4.51 can be found if clicking the above link, and locating "White papers - EPiServer CMS 4.51": http://world.episerver.com/Documents/WhitePapers/EPiServer%20CMS%204.51/EPiServer%20Installation%20Instructions.pdf

Good luck,
/Marten

Thanks Marten!

Another question - on my local dev environment - can my Episerver site run from a Virtual Directory? Or does it have to be at the root?

My dev machine is XP pro

I would install it at a physical directory, i.e. C:\ , seeing as there could be some system configuration troubles (finding the GAC and so forth) with having everything virtual.
