Are you asking if version 8 has a comparison mode, similiar to CMS 6?

This depends on your requirements. Do you want to know if the Episerver UI is in comparison mode? Or do you want the know on the page as its being rendered if its being shown as part of a comparison?

Ps you should be able to hook into the dojo topic /epi/shell/action/changeview. This should contain a model of type epi-cms/compare/command/CompareSettingsModel that is the details of the page being compared.
I've not tried this myself so let me know how you get on.
