Hey Carl, the navigation tree is a more specific version of the content tree that is used in the content selector and it is the navigation tree that adds all the extra icons. So there is no way to simply configure those icons to appear.
Changing the behavior would require you to have a custom editor that adds those icons. This probably involves a lot of work.

In the collapseable menu tree in admin you can see that pages are unpublished by an icon.
But in the media/page selector on a contentreference property you cannot.
How can you change this behavior?
