Personally dunno what's best practices but I found it convenient to use single file per language – better to manage, track and past it over to translation. Similar approach as you would do with source files – single file per type.

When it comes to language files, I understand it's possible to either have multiple languages within a XML file or having a separate file for each language (myFile-ENGG.xml, myFile-DEDE.xml), as using <languages> and <language> nodes correctly is the only requirement.
Is this correct and is one of the approaches considered a best practice?
