When opening the comapre versions view for content, the lefthand side version is the current version that you are looking at, as expected. However, the righthand version appears to default to the first published version, which I would expect to default to the version previous of the one on the lefthand side. Not sure if this is default Episerver behaviour but does anyone have a solution as to how I can modify which version is the default version to compare to.
