Link validation - does it work with files/images?

Hi everyone,

One of our clients has run through the link report and there are lots of links to file/images that have a status of 'Connection failure'. Looking at whats online about this already I have found EPi's page on the link validator. (http://world.episerver.com/Documentation/Items/Tech-Notes/EPiServer-CMS-6/EPiServer-CMS-60/Link-Validation/)

Right at the bottom of the document it has known limitations:

"The link validator does not handle private resources with the exception of pages. This includes documents and images stored on a local VPP that does not allow anonymous access. If forms authentication is used, these links will never be validated and are never shown in the link report. If basic or Windows authentication is used, links to these resources will result in 401 (access denied) in the link report. This may be the case for an intranet site with Windows authentication and anonymous access disabled."

I find this paragraph slightly unclear. Is it saying that as well as pages being handled it also includes documents and images or that documents and images are not handled?

Does anyone know the answer to this?

Many thanks,

Ella

Hi

If I remember correctly that paragraph is regarding links to documents/images that are not available for anonymous users, i.e. the everyone group does not have read access. Since the link validation does not impersonate a user, such documents can not be validated. The reason that pages that are not available for anonymous users can be validated is that we can validate them through the api bypassing the access rights check.

So in short, for internal links to documents/images, only the ones that everyone has access to will be validated.
